Formation for senior church administrators at CORAT Nairobi

Formation for senior church administrators at CORAT Nairobi (By Sr. Immaculate Nakato smr)

I am very grateful for the chance I have been given to do a course designed for leaders/senior executives in churches and church-related organizations.  I had a very positive experience.  I feel motivated and happy to transmit.

CORAT AFRICA was established for African and non Africans who are missionaries in Africa.  The course objective is; to provide participants with an opportunity to critically evaluate our leadership roles, to equip them with management and leadership skills necessary for running our organizations and to identify leadership and management challenges facing us/leaders today and ways of addressing them.

The training given is holistic in the sense that it is not only skills, but faith, community/team building, and application of evangelical values such as charity, collaboration and solidarity. They have highly qualified facilitators in different fields from universities within Kenya and elsewhere in Africa.  These facilitators are also available to those who invite them.

We were 24 participants: From Tanzania (4), Nigeria(5), Kenya(4), Southern Sudan(5), and one from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, and India.

Experience at corat

We had session from Monday to Friday starting at 8am to 5pm, followed by sports.  At the end of each day we evaluated facilitator’s presentation, relevance, overall class participation, and suggested changes whenever we thought necessary.

We covered a lot (see list below). The following is what I found more interesting and challenging in terms of administration.

  • The importance of having a financial strategicplan which direct financial activities; with solid policies and operational procedures.   This is done so as to have        common criteria how we administer goods, to Put in place control systems (monitoring and evaluation) and for cost cut measures.
  • How to coordinate finances better, at all levels e.g.

a.    Clearly understand roles, duties, responsibilities and procedures.

b.    Internal control systems for monitoring (supervision, Auditing, assets registers and evaluation, etc.)

c.    Working in teams (sharing responsibilities) so that not only one person is accountable.

d.    Adaptation of new technical skills

  •  For better management of members, shareholders and property, it is important that there is ongoing formation for bursars/administrators.  This is also because of changes concerning legal procedures in different countries.
  •  Revise property management policies.  Property hold a lot of the congregation money, do they all create benefits?  Do we keep maintenance records?  What about Green building (environmental sensitive, recycling, etc, can we reduce use of energy and water?  biogas, solar, energy saver bulbs)

Do we have safe custody of important official documents?

  •    What are the costs that pose a challenge to us?  How can we cut these costs?
  •     The need to upgrade process of budgeting, based on mission and clearly planned activities
  •     What plan do we have in place for Succession
  •    How can we integrate basic financial formation into on-formation process?

Experience at Corat

How we can practice performance appraisal.
